Daily Windows for the week of Jan. 1-7, 2017

SUNDAY

What would help you find rest and value in the LORD?

Morning and Midday
The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”  [Exodus 33:14 – NIV]

Evening
Most of the things we need to be most fully alive never come in busyness. They grow in rest. [Mark Buchanan]

MONDAY

What do you want to surrender today – and what do you want to ask for in exchange?

Morning and Midday
The Spirit of the LORD and King is on me. The LORD has anointed me to tell the good news to poor people. He has sent me to comfort those whose hearts have been broken. He has sent me to announce freedom for those who have been captured. He wants me to set prisoners free from their dark prisons. He has sent me to announce the year when he will set his people free. He wants me to announce the day when he will pay his enemies back. Our God has sent me to comfort all those who are sad. He wants me to help those in Zion who are filled with sorrow. I will put beautiful crowns on their heads in place of ashes. I will anoint them with oil to give them gladness instead of sorrow. I will give them a spirit of praise in place of a spirit of sadness. They will be like oak trees that are strong and straight. The LORD himself will plant them in the land. That will show how glorious he is.  [Isaiah 61:1-3, New International Reader’s Version]

Evening
He is intangible and invisible. But His work is more powerful than the most ferocious wind. The Spirit brings order out of chaos and beauty out of ugliness. He can transform a sin-blistered man into a paragon of virtue. The Spirit changes people. The Author of life is also the Transformer of life. [R.C Sproul]

TUESDAY

What would help you be more aware of God’s presence today?

Morning and Midday
I ask the Father in his great glory to give you the power to be strong inwardly through his Spirit. I pray that Christ will live in your hearts by faith and that your life will be strong in love and be built on love. And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love — how wide and how long and how high and how deep that love is.  Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with the fullness of God.  [Ephesians 3:16-19, New Century Version]

Evening
What a blessed and glorious thing human existence would be, if we fully realized that the infinitely wise and infinitely powerful God loves each one of us, with an intensity infinitely beyond what the most fervid human spirit ever felt towards another, and with a concentration as if He had none else to think of! And this love has brought us into being, just that we might be taught to enter into full sympathy with Him, receiving His, – giving our own – thus entering into the joy of our Lord. This is the hope – the sure and certain hope – set before us, – sure and certain, – for “the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee.”  [Thomas Erskine]

WEDNESDAY

What reminds you of all the reasons you have to be grateful?

Morning and Midday
I will exalt you, O LORD, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me.  O LORD my God, I called to you for help and you healed me.  [Psalm 30:1-2]

Evening
“God sees me,” is the sweet solace of the true believer. He knows the way that I take, will make that rugged way seem smooth. If perils and distress so shake the heart that plenteous tears give evidence of suffering, these tears are marked on high, and tender compassion will wipe them all away. The day has not yet come when there shall be no more tears. But the day is always present when they awaken sympathy in the Redeemer’s breast. He who wept on earth will soon wipe all tears away!  [William Law]

THURSDAY

What is the next step of commitment and action for you to join what God is doing in the world?

Morning and Midday
Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering. [Hebrews 13:1-3 NIV]

Evening
We must be ready to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God. God will be constantly crossing our paths and canceling our plans by sending us people with claims and petitions. We may pass them by, preoccupied by our more important tasks, as the priests passed by the man who had fallen among thieves, perhaps reading the bible….it is part of the discipline of humility that we must not spare our hand where it can perform a service and we do not assume that our schedule is our own to manage, but it is to be arranged by God. [Dietrich Bonhoeffer]

FRIDAY

What nagging and persistent habits or patterns do you need to confess?

Morning and Midday
Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.  [Psalm32:5]

Evening
Too often, we think of sin as self-contained, point-in-time choices with no interconnection or momentum. But sin refuses to remain contained in the moment it is conceived. [James MacDonald]

SATURDAY

What areas of need are difficult for you to admit?

Morning and Midday
It was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
taking them by the arms;
but they did not realize
it was I who healed them.
I led them with cords of human kindness,
with ties of love.
To them I was like one who lifts
a little child to the cheek,
and I bent down to feed them. [Hosea 11:3, 4 NIV]

Evening
An infinite God can give all of himself to each of His children. He does not distribute Himself that each may have a part, but to each one He gives all of Himself as full as if there were no others.  [A.W. Tozer]
